Getting on Track

Join Me in the Quest for a Cure
I am currently in training to run a full marathon in Lake Placid, NY on June 10th, 2012 to raise money for blood cancer research in honor of my brother, Bryan Martin, who is fighting leukemia.
Early this month, I received a brochure in the mail from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, telling me about Team in Training. I didn't really have to think very much about whether I wanted to do it or not, it was pretty clear that this is what I'd be doing for the next six months.
You see, Bryan was diagnosed this past August, and the first few weeks were particularly rough. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy, and has extensive nerve damage in his feet and left hand. Being a lefty, he's had to learn how to do everything with his right hand. He also continues to face various side effects from the chemo. If he can do all of that, all with a great attitude and sense of humor, there's no reason that I can't train for a marathon!
In 1985, my uncle, William Petrillo was also striken by this disease, and lost his battle. In less than thirty years, my family has seen first hand the great strides the medical community has made in treating blood cancers, some of which have been crossed over to treat other cancers. So you can see how important this cause is to me.
Now, I am asking for your support. My goal is to raise $4000 by May 27th. Would you please consider making a tax deductible donation to show your support? In doing so, you will be supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s vital mission. With the generosity of people like you, there is every reason to believe that a cure for blood cancers is in sight! Donations support research which helps develop new treatments for blood cancer, which in turn help a wide variety of cancer patients. Donations also go to patient services.
$50 will register 1 person to be a bone marrow donor.
$75 will provide HLA (bone marrow) typing for a family member of a patient with leukemia.
$100 will pay for the cost of 4 patient’s chemotherapy drug prescription co-payments.
$300 will train 25 peer volunteers who can provide emotional support to newly diagnosed patients.
$1000 allows patients to meet with health care specialists to design and discuss their disease, treatment plan and prepare them with the info they will need during the treatment process.
$2000 provides patients with a one month supply of Gleevec, a life-saving treatment developed with LLS funding
This is why I'm running. I'm running for my brother. I'm running for my friend Jeffrey Mello, my friend's Justin's mom, and or each single person diagnosed with a blood cancer every four minutes. I'm running for the memories of my Uncle Billy, my niece and Bryan's daughter Jillian's classmate, my co-worker Euvania's son, and each single person who dies from blood cancers every ten minutes.
I'm running towards a cure, and I need your support. Even if you cannot give monetarily, you can help greatly by passing this page along, sharing it on your Facebook and Twitter pages, and telling anyone you know. We can do this together!
